The Technological Institute of Optics, Color and Imaging (AIDO), is developing a sophisticated system for real-time beach monitoring for the Valencia City Council. The resulting system, based on machine vision technology and robotics will offer daily live images of the city’s Malvarrosa-Cabanyal beach.
This project, promoted by the City Council, involves the placement of a series of devices which will provide real-time visualizations of beach scenes (including number of people, beach warning flag displayed, etc) and daily weather reports. In addition, the intervalometer functionality implemented in the vision sub-system will allow citizens to watch video sequences whose time domain has been compressed, so that long interval footage can be played in a few seconds (i.e. a whole day sequence can be played in a minute).
The system installation will be done at Las Arenas Hotel -as it is located on an area which offers a better perspective of the whole beach- and will consist of three different elements. The first one will be an IP camera of reduced dimensions which will be used for the real-time visualisation beach with open access through www.valencia.es.
A second camera will record video which will be processed using statistical person flow control algorithms for access zone monitoring.
As a third element, an interval shooting camera will be integrated. This type of camera consists of an automated camera controlled by a PC which generates sequences of video which are transmitted to a server in order to be accessible to the public through a web portal. The whole system setup has been designed in order to minimize the visual impact in the environment where it is to be located. By using last generation technology the citizens of the Valencian Community and visitors will be safer while staying at the Beach of the Malvarrosa-Cabanyal. As well, visitors to the beach will be able to plan in advance their stay depending on the weather reports or the beach state.
