The laser extends life of metal components

The  main objective of this project is to develop an application of surface treatment of metals by the technique of laser peening, also called laser shot processing (LSP), capable of treating high strength materials, and the extension of this technique to materials of industrial interest like  tool steels, bronzes and maraging steels.

Technological innovation:
Through the LSP apply shock waves on the surface of the material, generating compressive residual stresses in the treated area. Thanks to this treatment achieves significantly improve the life of parts under oscillating loads over time (fatigue), hindering the appearence and growth of cracks in the surface of the component.
Industrial application:
AIDO is specialist in studying the mechanism of generation and propagation of shock waves through the plasma confinement generated by the laser, incorporating the use of means of absorption and confinement of higher performance than the currently used. Enterprises can extend pieces lifetime, increasing performance and decreasing their costs. The Project is supported by the Ministry of Science and Innovation and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) PID-file number 560300-2009-7
